Trying to decide how to mount these little terra cotta busts. Will be making more for @yardartcontemporary in Denver this summer. I always love the combo for clay and steel and this terrracotta from Tuscany w the new white slip made by my buddy potter @markmudman has a soft look. Also elevating them gives them an airy look. Japan had a big influence on me in the 90's. This is on e of my drawings from that period after spending several months working there on a large marble sculpture>. My figures became more feminine, inspired from seeing the Japanese women in traditional Kimono dress.⁠

Check your inboxes for some studio news 💌 I want to share an inspiration that I had last week while it's still fresh and incubating. I have worked in Serre di Rapolano in travertine for many years with sculptor Ricardo Grazzi. The open rolling hills (south of Siena) are a sharp contrast to the rugged seaside of Carrara, where the marble quarries are in the Apuane Alps. The travertine has a warmer look and is softer to work in contrast to marble, which is elegant and sensuous.⁠

While visiting Grazzi's studio last week, I placed my clay sculpture in front of one of his models to take a photo. The light was soft from the window, and we simultaneously agreed that the relationship between our work presented an excellent collaboration integrating the architectural sculpture with the female figure. Part of my process is matching a marble block to an idea. In this case the ceramic terra cotta model I will use to enlarge in Carrara marble. I like to bring the models to the block to visualize the form and decide on her size. Also, I study the veining to determine which way to orient the figure. ⁠
